 Royal Challengers Bangalore 160 for 8 ( de Villiers- 48, Maxwell- 39, Bumrah- 2-26, Janeson- 2-28) beat Mumbai Indians 159 for 9 ( Lynn- 49, Yadav- 31, Patel – 5-27) by two wickets.

 Two players who have not much of senior competitive cricket since IPL 2020, turned up with the ball, then with the bat for Royal Challengers Bangalore beat the defending champions Mumbai Indians in the season opener. Harshal Patel took IPL’s 

first five-wicket haul against Mumbai Indians, giving 5-27 in his four overs ripping the heart out of Mumbai’s best hitters with the variety of slower balls and perfect Yorkers to keep IPL’s winning-est side to just a low the score of 159 for 9.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore had their hands on the game when they needed 62 off 46 balls with eight wickets in hand with Kohli and Maxwell batting in a very good rhythm, but a collapse arises with Mumbai clawing back of the way into the contest. However they couldn’t get past AB de Villiers- not until the last over, when he was run-out who had done enough for his team and put them in a position from there they couldn’t lose the match. Patel bowled 16,18 and 20 and was single-handedly responsible for restricting Mumbai for 160 when they were looking for a total of 180.  His wickets were Ishan Kishan, the Pandya Brothers, Kieron Pollard, and debutant Marco Jansen, and each wicket were a result of the bowler outfoxing the batsman. 

His bowling meant that the Royal Challengers Bangalore could weather a collapse and still win, but they needed de Villiers to smash 48 off 27 in a death- over master class, tackling Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah. Patel still needed to come out and hit the winning runs with one run needed off the final ball, a perfect Yorker whipped away towards a short fine leg. So, Mumbai Indians continue with their tradition of losing their first match, they have not won their opening match in IPL since 2013.

 Patel began his IPL, with his new team conceding seven runs on the first legal ball via a no-ball and a free hit six, amongst fifteen runs in an over. After that, he was given bowling in the death overs facing the fiery big hitters of Mumbai. After that, he responded with three that would make everyone forget the hole-in-death bowling of the challengers. In the 16th over when he returned into the attack, with Kishan and Hardik batting, looking in full flow of batting on the first three balls he conceded three runs, and on the fourth ball Hardik used Patel's pace and hit a four and on the last ball of the over Patel took the wicket of Hardik on a full- toss, Nitin Menon the umpire gave him out but Hardik reviewed the decision and the third umpire reminded with the decision of the on-field umpire. In the next over, he bowled, he bowled a perfect yorker to Kishan so well bowled, that Nitin Menon the on-field field gave not out, but captain Kohli reviewed the decision, the third umpire reversed the decision, and Kishan who was looking good got out.

His last over was of a top-class, with Krunal and Pollard falling on the first two balls of the over, by a change in pace to whole out. A perfect yorker to Jenson almost gave him his hat-trick, but it just missed the stumps. He was not denied, because he got his five-wicket haul on the nest ball only, got a hat-trick on the inswinging yorker, and the stumps just shattered away. Patel had bowled three overs from the last five overs, which saw conceding 31 runs, and the last over yielded a single run and it was Patel's grandstand finish.

With Devdutt Padikkal not fully recovered after getting covid- positive, Washington Sundar opened the batting with skipper Virat Kohli. The move didn't quite pay off because he got out early, he was not able to find gaps, Kohli started smoothly in the powerplay, which got the team in a smooth position. Sundar and Rajat Patidar- the debutant fall cheaply, but that allowed Maxwell to come at number 4, for his new franchise. On his third ball, the reverse sweep to  Rahul Chahar for a boundary. Shortly, he stepped out and his Krunal Pandya for six of hundred meters, which went out of the stadium. This six was Maxwell's first six after two years, as he had a drought of sixes for two years. Both Kohli and Maxwell were looking good, but in the 13th overcame Jasprit Bumrah came and got the crucial wicket of Virat Kohli to Mumbai. From 98 for 2, they slipped to 122-6. But the main man de Villiers as there, and they needed 34 of 16 balls, then came the over of Boult and he conceded 15 runs, then with the balance in the game, came Bumrah's over, he conceded 12 runs. Then came the last over when the challengers needed 7 off 6 balls, then the final twist came and he got run-out. Then, came the hero of the first inning scored the winning runs.
